Growing up as a kid, you really get attached to the idea of having the people in your life with you, and that idea comforts you. It isn’t until you’re older that you understand that no one and nothing truly stays with you forever. The emotions and memories stay with you, their light, and that’s the important part.
It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and exhausted in our busy lives, and so hard to get past the stress of worrying. If only we could get – every day – to that perfect sense of “flow,” where things just seem to happen, you’re engaged in the moment, not worried or distracted!
I had been carrying a small Bahá’í card with a picture and a quote from the Holy Writings, "Work done in the spirit of service is the highest form of worship."
I carried that card around with me for some time. Then one day I encountered a man sweeping the leaves out of the lobby of the Post Office, and I thought this was an opportunity to show appreciation for a task that needed doing so I gave him the card. I didn't know if he was a volunteer or being paid.
